ABSTRACT

Many zoonotic diseases are found in wild animals and present a serious risk to human health, in particularly the virus carried by birds flying freely around the world is hard to control. There are three main bird migration routes which cover the most areas of China. It is important to investigate and fully understand the types of avian transmitted diseases in key areas on the bird migration routines and its impacts on both birds and human health. However, no literature is available in how about the risk of virus carried by migrating birds, and how to predict and reduce this risk of virus spreading to human being so far. In this paper, we first reviewed the main pathogen types carried by birds, including coronaviruses, influenza viruses, parasites, Newcastle disease virus (NDV), etc., and then discussed the spread risk of avian viruses to human being and animals in key areas of biosafety prevention. We also analyzed and discussed the risk of cross-spread of diseases among different bird species in nature reserves located on bird migration routes which provide sufficient food sources for migratory birds and attract numerous birds. Diseases transmitted by wild birds pose a serious threat to poultry farms, where high density of poultry may become avian influenza virus (AIV) reservoirs, cause a risk of avian influenza outbreaks. Airports are mostly built in suburban areas or remote areas with good ecological environment. There are important transit places for bird migration and densely populated areas, which have serious risk of disease transmission. Finally, this paper puts forward the following prevention suggestions from three aspects. First, establish and improve the monitoring and prediction mechanism of migratory birds, and use laser technology to prevent contact between wild birds and poultry. Second, examine and identify virus types carried by birds in their habitats and carry out vaccination. Third, protect the ecological environment of bird habitat, and keep wild birds in their natural habitat, so as to reduce the contact between wild birds and human and poultry, and thus reduce the risk of virus transmission.

ABSTRACT

The spread of COVID-19 has increased the risk of contact transmission between people, and imposes challenges and opportunities for the prevention and control of important parasitic diseases. There may be risks of COVID-19 infection during the implementation of the virus control, including in field investigation and intervention, contacting with fecal samples, or with asymptomatic infected people. Therefore, corresponding prevention and control measures should be taken before and during field investigation, and in sample transportation and detection to prevent the risks effectively. In this paper, the risks and corresponding countermeasures in the above processes are discussed in detail, and the opportunities that COVID-19 brought to the disease control system are also analyzed.Copyright © 2021, National Institute of Parasitic Diseases. ABSTRACT

Objectives: Due to large sample sizes, electronic medical records (EMR) databases have the potential to provide pivotal insights into patients diagnosed with rare, orphan, or emerging diseases. This study aimed to explore the patient profile of African and American trypanosomiasis, both vector-borne parasitic diseases, pre-and post the COVID-19 pandemic using the TriNetX Network. Method(s): From Jan 1, 2018 - Nov 30, 2019 (pre-COVID) and Jan 1, 2020 - Nov 30, 2021 (post-COVID) patients were queried from the TriNetX Global health research network, inclusive of 88 million patients from the United States (US), Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and Asia Pacific. Eligible patients with an ICD-10 diagnosis code of African trypanosomiasis or American trypanosomiasis were identified (2280 patients on 22-Dec-2022) and analyzed separately, pre- and post-COVID. Result(s): We identified 340 patients pre- and 960 patients post-COVID with African trypanosomiasis and 960 patients pre- and 190 patients post-COVID with American trypanosomiasis. Most patients resided in the US. Pre-COVID African trypanosomiasis patients had a mean age of 38 and were 59% female while post-COVID patients had a mean age of 34 and were 57% female. Pre-COVID American trypanosomiasis patients had a mean age of 49 and were 57% female while post-COVID patients had a mean age of 49 and were 53% female. Top co-diagnoses included diseases of the respiratory (85%, 84%) and nervous systems (82%, 79%) for patients with African trypanosomiasis and diseases of the digestive (69%, 54%) and circulatory systems (68%, 61%) for patients with American trypanosomiasis in both the pre- and post-COVID cohorts, respectively. Conclusion(s): Using real-world EMR data we were able to obtain patient profiles for a rare disease (African trypanosomiasis) and a common, emerging disease (American trypanosomiasis). This informationsupportsutilizing EMR data for describing patient populations in rare, orphan, or emerging diseases, which may aid drug development for these indications.Copyright © 2023

ABSTRACT

Toxoplasmosis is a zoonotic illness that spreads from animals to people. Toxoplasma gondii, a protozoan parasite that infects warm-blooded mammals, causes the sickness. Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic infection that causes abortion and death in animals. Cats are the parasite's sole sexual hosts, thus they're the only ones who can get it. Because cats are frequent pets, they are highly likely to come into touch with humans. As a result, the disease poses a risk to human health. The potential danger is influenced by the frequency of oocyst secretion and the level of contamination in the environment. Toxoplasmosis has serious consequences for both animal and human health, hence preventative actions should be taken to reduce the dangers. COVID-19 is affected by such methods as well. Toxoplasmosis is thought to increase immunological and immunosuppressive factors, which increases the chance of SARS-CoV-2 infection and the severity of the resulting COVID-19. Research into Toxoplasma gondii intermediate hosts might help understand COVID-19's dynamics and determine if the virus can be transferred from animals to humans. We explore what we know about Toxoplasma gondii infection as a human parasitosis and how it may alter the course of SARS-CoV-2 infection in this review study.

ABSTRACT

CD4+CD25+FOXP3+regulatory T cells (Tregs) contribute to the maintenance of immune homeostasis and tolerance in the body. The expression levels and functional stability of FOXP3 control the function and plasticity of Tregs. Tregs critically impact infectious diseases, especially by regulating the threshold of immune responses to pathogenic microorganisms. The functional regulatory mechanism and cell-specific surface markers of Tregs in different tissues and inflammatory microenvironments have been investigated in depth, which can provide novel ideas and strategies for immunotherapies targeting infectious diseases.Copyright © 2021. ABSTRACT

The article presents data on the epidemic process of varicella (chickenpox) in Moscow and the Sverdlovsk region against the background of many years of use of varicella vaccines in the implementation of regional programs for children's immunization against varicella. An estimate of the volume of varicella vaccination in these regions is given. Aim. Evaluation of the effectiveness of varicella vaccination within the framework of regional vaccination schedules in Moscow and the Sverdlovsk region for the scientific substantiation of recommendations for expanding the National Immunization Schedule of the Russian Federation. Material and methods. To assess the epidemic situation in terms of the incidence of varicella in 2006-2021, data from forms No. 2 of the Federal State Statistical Observation "Information on infectious and parasitic diseases" and forms No. 23-17 "Information on outbreaks of infectious diseases" in Moscow in 2017-2021 were used. To assess the volume of vaccination against chickenpox, we took into account the data of form No. 5 of the Federal State Statistical Observation "Information on preventive vaccinations" in the Russian Federation and certain territories in 2013-2021. We have carried out a retrospective epidemiological analysis of the distribution of the incidence of chickenpox in general on the territory of the Russian Federation, Moscow and the Sverdlovsk region. Results and discussion. In the regions of the Russia where the planned varicella vaccination of children is carried out with low coverage and the use of a single-dose immunization scheme, after the success of regional programs in the first years of their implementation, the "growing up" of infection, an increase in the incidence of varicella of children of the first year of life, and an increase in the probability of congenital forms were revealed. Against the background of a decrease in the incidence of varicella in 2020-2021, as a result of restrictive measures in organized groups, as part of the response to the COVID-19 epidemic, susceptible individuals accumulate, which allows predicting another epidemic increase in incidence. Conclusion. Based on regional experience, it is recommended to introduce 2 doses of varicella vaccination into the National Vaccination Schedule with at least 90% coverage.Copyright © Eco-Vector, 2022.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: An ectoparasitic disease, scabies, caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei var hominis. Some of the predisposing factors are overcrowding, unhygienic surroundings, immunocompromised status, dementia, homelessness, and sexual contact. In this study, we wanted to evaluate the changed distribution of lesions of scabies during pandemic. METHODS: A cross sectional study was performed on 600 patients attending the skin department of our tertiary care hospital over a period of 6 months. The sites of the scabies lesions were noted along with types of lesions. Demographic data and history of regular hand washing and sanitization were also documented. RESULTS: Our study revealed an important correlation between change in pattern of distribution of scabies lesions from being less frequent on finger webs (19%) to being more frequent on abdomen (periumbilical area) (73%) and groins (67%) due to regular hand washing and frequent sanitization, in this pandemic era. CONCLUSIONS: A significant change in distribution of skin lesions in scabies can be noticed during this COVID-19 pandemic.

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 belongs to the group of acute respiratory infections and it is often complicated with pneumonia. This study aimed to investigate manifestations of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) epidemic process during the COVID-19 epidemic in the Russian Federation. We analyzed the official statistical data reporting the incidence of CAP in the Russian Federation in 2013-2020 and incidence of COVID-19 as registered in March-July 2020. The mean average annual CAP incidence rate that we calculated and the 2020 CAP incidence prediction allowed assessing the relationship between CAP and COVID-19. It is shown that the long-term dynamics of the incidence of CAP in the Russian Federation is characterized by a pronounced upward trend with an average annual growth rate of 6.4%. The share of adult population among the CAP cases is the largest;on average, it is 64.7% (95% CI [63.1;66.3]). In 2020, against the background of SARS-CoV-2 circulation, the discrepancy between the actual incidence of CAP and the predicted figures reached and exceeded 558% (in July 2020). As the COVID-19 epidemic developed, the incidence of CAP was registered to increase. There was established a direct and significant correlation between the incidence of CAP and COVID-19 (rxy = 0.932;p <0.01).Copyright © 2022 Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproduction. ABSTRACT

The aim - study the main causes and factors that led to the death of patients with pneumonia from a new coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in a hospital setting. Material and methods. Analysis of 84 case histories with fatal outcomes, as well as postmortem examination of 6 deceased patients. Results and discussion. Comparative analysis of overall mortality rates by nosology among the population for the period 2019-2020 (n=33 537;36 299) shows that in 2020 the number of patients who died from respiratory diseases increased 2.1 times or 106%, from infectious and parasitic diseases - 1.3 times or 30.8%. The first case of infection with a new coronavirus infection (COVID-19) among citizens of the Republic of Tajikistan was registered on April 30, 2020, it was then that a quarantine restrictions was announced in the country. The peak of infection in Tajikistan fell in mid-May and the first ten days of June 2020, when from 80 to 210 patients were registered per day. In Tajikistan, since January 10, 2021, no cases of COVID-19 have been officially registered. As of January 30, 2021, the number of people infected with COVID-19 in the country was 13 308, of which 13 218 (99.3%) people were cured, 90 (0.68%) people died. The number of cases of pneumonia in the first 10 months of 2020 compared to 2019 increased from 12 802 to 18 504 people, or by 5702, and the number of deaths - from 129 to 291, that is, 2.3 times or 125.6%. At the same time, 10 606 cases of COVID-19 associated with pneumonia were registered in Tajikistan during this period, which amounted to 57.3% of the total number of cases. An analysis of the history of the deceased showed that in 4.3% of cases the age of the deceased was from 30 to 39 years, in 30.4% - from 40 to 60 years and in 65.3% - over 61 years. Conclusion. The analysis of deaths among the population of Tajikistan shows that in 2020 there was an increase in the mortality rate, the incidence of seasonal pneumonia and the number of patients with COVID-19 associated with pneumonia.Copyright © 2021 Sovero Press Publishing House. ABSTRACT

Coinfection caused by bacteria, parasites, or viruses complicates almost all feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) infections. Pathogens that colonize the gastrointestinal tract, Clostridium perfingens, Clostridium piliforme, Cryptosporidium spp, Giardia spp, Tritrichomonas fetus, canine parvovirus type 2,Salmonella sp., feline coronavirus, feline bocavirus, and feline astrovirus were isolated in the presence of FPV infection. Complex mechanisms between viruses, bacteria, protozoa, and hosts contribute to the pathogenesis and severity of coinfection. Prompt and accurate diagnosis, vaccination precautions, and appropriate treatment play important roles in reducing morbidity and mortality. This article outlines the etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment that can help veterinarians and pet owners improve their knowledge of managing the diseases.

ABSTRACT

To establish a PCR detection method for Trichomonas foetus, the primers were designed and synthesized according to the 18S rRNA gene sequence of T. foetus published by GenBank. The positive recombinant plasmid pUCm-T-TF18S of T. foetus was used as the template, and the genomic DNA of Giardia felis, Coccidia +e-lis, feline parvovirus and cDNA of feline coronavirus were used as the control for PCR detection to analyze the specificity of this method. The positive T. foetus recombinant plasmid was serial to 8 different concentrations with a gap of 10 folds, and PCR was performed to analyze the sensitivity of this method. The pUCm-T-TF18S plasmids stored at -20 " for 3, 6, 9 and 12 months were detected by PCR to analyze the stability of the method. Twenty cat fecal samples were tested using this established PCR assay and compared with those of microscopic examination. The results showed that the recombinant plasmid pUCm-T- TF18S gave specific bands after PCR amplification. The sequencing results showed that the length of the product sequence was 1 264 bp, and the BLAST sequence comparison analysis showed 99.53% sequence identity, which is consistent with that of T. foetus from cats (GenBank registration number M81842.1). The PCR method for detection of T. foetus had no cross-reactivities with C. felis, G. felis, feline coronavirus and feline parvovirus;the minimum detectable template concentration is 4.52 X 105 copies/xl;The target band of T. foetus DNA can still be detected after being stored in the refrigerator at -20 " for 12 months. This method detected 16 positive samples of T. foetus nucleic acid from 20 cat fecal samples, which is more accurate and sensitive than the results from traditional microscopy (13 samples). It is suggested that the PCR method for the detection of T. foetus is highly specific, sensitive and stable, and can be used for clinical detection and epidemiological investigation of T. foetus.Copyright © 2022, National Institute of Parasitic Diseases. ABSTRACT

Background and Aim: Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease transmitted by sandflies and is one of the endemic diseases of Iran. With the spread of the Covid-19 epidemic worldwide, the virus will interface with endemic infectious diseases in different regions. In this study, coronavirus disease was evaluated in patients with a history of leishmaniasis referred to the Center of Research and Training in Skin Diseases and Leprosy. Methods: A total of 91 patients with a history of leishmaniasis were studied for possible SARS-CoV-2 infection. The number of patients referred to the Center of Research and Training in Skin Diseases and Leprosy during the coronavirus epidemic was also compared with the same period before the epidemic Results: A total of 60% of patients with leishmaniasis did not report coronavirus disease. Twenty-one percent of cases had a mild corona disease, 13% had a moderate and 3% had severe corona disease. Only a single death was reported in corona patients with a history of cutaneous leishmaniasis. The number of referrals before the beginning of the corona epidemic was twice as high as during the epidemic. Conclusion: In these participants, mortality and side effects of COVID-19 were significantly less reported. However, further studies are needed to evaluate the immune system and cutaneous leishmaniasis protection against COVID-19. Various factors can be effective in reducing patients during the epidemic, including not going to medical centers, reducing the number of trips, and observance of health issues.

ABSTRACT

In 2021, the number of children who required PC for STH decreased for pre-SAC from 291.2 million to 260.6 million and for SAC from 732.3 million to 653.7 million (Figure 2). This change was mainly due to revision of the numbers of children who require PC for STH in India, which decreased from 103.5 to 80.7 million for pre-SAC and from 332.1 to 259.1 million for SAC. The decreases were based on impact assessment surveys conducted in the past few years, which changed the endemicity status of some districts. Globally, PC coverage of SAC increased from 47% in 2020 to 62.9% in 2021.The number of SAC reached with deworming increased almost to that before the COVID-19 pandemic (411 million in 2021, 344 million in 2020, 455.9 million in 2019), indicating that countries are recovering.

ABSTRACT

Historically organometallic compounds have been used to cure certain diseases with limited applications. Although bismuth belongs to the category of heavy metals, many of its derivatives have found applications in modern drug discovery research, mainly because of its low toxicity and higher bioavailability. Being an eco-friendly mild Lewis acid, compounds having bismuth as a central atom are capable of binding several proteins in humans and other species. Bismuth complexes demonstrated antibacterial potential in syphilis, diarrhea, gastritis, and colitis. Apart from antibacterial activities, bismuth compounds exhibited anticancer, antileishmanial, and some extent of antifungal and other medicinal properties. This article discusses major synthetic methods and pharmacological potentials of bismuth complexes exhibiting in vitro activity to significant clinical performance in a systematic and timely manner.Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd

ABSTRACT

Case report Background: It is well known that chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) has an autoimmune etiology in 40% of cases. It is often comorbid with other autoimmune diseases and a wide spectrum of autoantibodies involved in the pathogenesis of CSU is discussed. Objective(s): We share a clinical case of a rare underline autoimmune disease with later onset of CSU and chronic induced urticaria (CIU). Case: A 38-year- old woman was admitted to the hospital with SARS-CoV- 2 infection. At the age of 22, she was diagnosed with Takayasu's disease involving the aorta, the common and external carotid artery, and the left subclavian artery. Surgical interventions were performed twice -angioplasty of the involved vessels, but in both cases restenosis of the affected arteries was observed. Regarding the underlying disease, the patient received 10 mg of methotrexate once a week and 20 mg of prednisone daily. Due to detailed history collection, the patient noted that for the last 4 months she has rashes, bright red in color, rising above the surface of the skin and accompanied by a strong burning and itching dominantly on the upper and lower extremities, trunk. Appearing every day spontaneously, they have a rounded shape (diameter of up to 40-50 mm). While liner scratching the rash has similar contour. Rash elements disappear within a few hours, do not leave traces. During the current hospitalization, a wheal element up to 40 mm in diameter was observed at the wrist area, stayed for a few hours. UAS-7 -42. According to examination: eosinophils 1000 cells/mcl (patient noticed that eosinophilia of the blood has happened before, an examination was conducted, helminthiasis and parasitosis were excluded), total IgE -more than 2000 IU/ml, antibodies to b2-glycoprotein were revealed. Freak test -negative, but the linear wheals were confirmed by retrospective photos. Result(s): In this clinical case, CSU occurs in combination with induced dermographic urticaria. This patient has extremely aggressive urticaria according to its frequency of occurrence despite therapy with systemic GCS and methotrexate. After recovery from coronavirus infection, further examination and consideration of the appointment of biologicals(anti-IgE) is planned.

ABSTRACT

In January 2023, a total of 64 infectious diseases were reported globally, affecting 235 countries and regions. Except for influenza, the top five infectious diseases affecting greatest number of countries and regions were COVID-19 (235), monkeypox (110), dengue fever (31), measles (27) and cholera (15). The top five infectious diseases with highest case fatality rates were Nipah virus disease (62.5%), Ebola virus disease (47.0%), Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (37.5%), Lassa fever (15.1%) and West Nile fever (7.6%). The top five infectious diseases with greatest number of deaths were COVID-19, malaria, cholera, measles and dengue fever. This article compares the development of the highly infectious COVID-19 disease in humans with infections or infestations in honey bees. The importance of knowledge on the exotic nature of COVID-19 and each of its variants in providing a useful insight as to how it would be expected to develop, and in particular the expected reduction in its virulence over time, is also discussed.

ABSTRACT

In December 2022, a total of 68 infectious diseases were reported globally, affecting 235 countries and regions. Except for influenza, the top five infectious diseases affecting greatest number of countries and regions were COVID-19 (235), monkeypox (110), dengue fever (28), measles (27) and cholera (14). The top five infectious diseases with highest case fatality rates were Ebola virus disease (47.0%), Rift Valley fever (44.2%), Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (40.0%), Lassa fever (17.6%) and West Nile fever (7.6%). The top five infectious diseases with greatest number of deaths were COVID-19, malaria, cholera, dengue fever and measles.
